Which are the requisites to sell food products in Peru?

Peru
In Peru, food products like chocolates, biscuits, wine and cold cuts must be approved by Digesa (the Directorate-General of Environmental Health) in order to be brought to the market. Yessenia Paredes, Partner at ONTIER Peru, explains for El Comercio that any company willing to sell food products needs to obtain the health registration number.

According to Yessenia, the first step to take in order to obtain the approval would be filing a request with the product information (product name, commercial name, brand -optional-, expiry date, conservation requirements, batch number, list of ingredients and additives).

The request shall also include the results of a microbiological test, a physicochemical test and occasionally a bromatological test in certain food products like those for babies.

Paredes also notes that the retailer needs to make sure that the packaging includes all the information required by Peruvian regulations. 'The product name, ingredients, health registration number, expiry date, batch number and special conservation requirements must be specified in the packaging.'
